I am not sure all this progress is a good thing. When I was growing up we would tell our parents that we were going to go play. We usually didn't have to say where, they knew that we knew what we were allowed to do. We didn't have a cell phone to contact them or all of our friends whenever we wanted. Using the phone was something that we had to earn. It wasn't something that was handed to us on a silver platter. We would stay out till dinner time, then help clean up and then go again. We were always out playing with someone or someone was always at our house. It seems that our house was a constant stream of people. It was really something special when we got to go all the way from our house to grandma's. (Pickerington to Baltimore) We walked about everywhere. Need to go to the store? Well the road isn't crowded. My brother and I use to ride our bikes from Lithopolis to Canal Winchester to go swimming. Do you think I would let my kid do that now? I love being able to get on my computer and talk to people or email people. But do you remember how wonderful it makes you feel to receive an envelope in the mail? Sure I enjoy these modern conveniences, but I would gladly give up every one of them to be able to let my child play all day at the neighbors, or let her ride her bike a few miles by herself, just give it all up for a little of the old security and peace of mind.
